UPDATE: The fascinator is officially up for grabs on eBay. The starting bid was £5,000, or roughly $8,229, with proceeds from the sale being split between UNICEF UK and Children in Crisis. The auction closes Sunday, May 22. So get clicking. Oh, and we nearly forgot the best part: free shipping!

________

Well, at least some good will come from the Philip Treacy monstrosity (lest we forget, the blame for the outlandish fascinator was not hers alone) that graced Princess Beatrice's head at the royal wedding.

The show-stopping (do we even need to say not in a good way?) headpiece is about to be yours for the taking, as Beatrice's mum Sarah Ferguson announced on The Oprah Winfrey Show that the princess can't wait to get the thing out of her sight will be auctioning off the, um, distinctive piece for a good cause.

And no, it's not the Flesh-Colored Antlers of a Baroque Stag Conservation Society. Or the Where Did I Leave That Squid? Foundation. Hard as that may be to believe.

"She's putting it up on eBay to auction it for UNICEF and for children in crisis," the Duchess told Winfrey on an episode airing today.

There's no word yet on when the hat will be officially placed on the auction block, though if you're one of the 136,000 (and counting) friends of Princess Beatrice's Ridiculous Royal Wedding Hat Facebook page (and why wouldn't you be?), you'll probably be among the first to hear the news.

The fascinator, incidentally, was custom-made for Beatrice by couture milliner Philip Treacy, but even if it wasn't, we think you'd agree it's pretty priceless. But just for comparison, the hatmaker's less infamous creations run in the ballpark of $3,300 a pop.

Tiptoeing cat not included.
