New mom Eva Mendes stepped out in Los Angeles on Halloween and you would never guess she'd given birth, oh, just around seven weeks ago. The 40-year-old—who welcomed daughter Esmeralda Amada on Sept. 12 with boyfriend Ryan Gosling—looked comfy and casual in a black cardigan, trousers and brown platform booties.
"Eva's flattered that people think she looks good, but she's not taking complete credit for it. She knows genetics plays a big role. She has great genes," a source tells E! News exclusively.
The insider reveals that Eva's been drinking more water and tea than ever, as well as following a high protein/low carb meal delivery plan. Breast-feeding also helps with post-pregnancy weight loss, but Eva is being careful to take in an extra 300 calories a day—the same amount she added to her diet while pregnant.
"Overall, she's trying to eat only when hungry and not snack too much," the source shared.
But the Hitch actress is still game for the occasional cheat night. (We'd say that with a newborn in the house a cheat night or two is more than well-earned.)
"For her splurges, her mom's been cooking her traditional Spanish dishes. Those are her treats. While Ryan is gone, her mom has been spending a lot of time helping her. His mom comes too, but her mom is the mainstay," the source revealed.
We know that pre-baby workout plans are making a strong comeback—à la mom-to-be Carrie Underwood—but what about Eva's post-baby fitness regime? We're told that the new mom is taking it slowly and not following a strict exercise routine yet. She has been taking Esmeralda on short walks, which is an easy fitness habit for new moms to pick up in the weeks after having a baby.
According to the source, Eva and Ryan FaceTime constantly so he can keep up with his little girl while filming The Nice Guys in Atlanta. Gosling was also seen in Los Angeles last weekend—likely getting in some quality time at home with his girls.
