BBCSherlock fans, you might not be too happy with us after reading what we have to tell you. The Benedict Cumberbatch-fronted series might not come back for a long time.
Boo! Hiss!
In an interview with IGN, Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat revealed the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) might not resume until the timing is just right. Yep, it might be another two years or longer. It's OK, let out that "NOOOOOO!!!" We'll wait.
But at least you're sort of used to it, right?
"I have no idea," Moffat said when asked if there will be a two-year wait for season four of Sherlock. "Sue's [Vertue] working on the schedules right now. I just started with [Peter Capaldi] on the new series of Doctor Who. You know, we'll do what we can, but with no sacrifice in quality—that's the thing. If people have to wait two years, they'll have to wait two years. When's the next James Bond film? You know, it's not that kind of show that turns up all the time. It's just not. But the good news is, that probably means it will turn up sporadically for a very, very long while."
Sherlock originally debuted in 2010. Season two followed in 2012 and season three, which just wrapped its run in the US on PBS, launched in 2014. The show's ratings have grown each year, thanks in part to its availability on Netflix.
Moffat's commitment to Doctor Who and the growing demand for Cumberbatch and Freeman could make the wait for new Sherlock even longer. Freeman is currently starring in The Hobbit films and can next be seen in FX's Fargo.
However, one thing is clear: We will be getting more Sherlock.
Cumberbatch and Freeman have already committed to a fourth season and Moffat said he and co-creator Mark Gatiss have plotted out seasons four and five. Now it's just a matter of when those seasons will get made. Cumberbatch, who recently popped up on the big screen in August: Osage County and 12 Years a Slave, said he's down for playing Sherlock Holmes for many years to come.
"I'm going to keep going with it," Cumberbatch said at TCA. "I play enough other mad people to vary the palate of what I'm scrabbling around in my head as a storyteller...I love [playing Sherlock]. I find it very invigorating."
