AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Nathan DenettePhilip Seymour Hoffman, the critically acclaimed actor known for his work both in film and on stage, has died.
Hoffman was found alone and unconscious in his New York City apartment on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014. He was 46.
"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone," Hoffman's family said in a statement obtained by E! News. "This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."
The NYPD confirms to E! News that they received a 911 call shortly after 11:30 a.m in the West Village neighborhood.
Police sources said that the actor died of an apparent drug overdose. The New York City Medical Examiner will work to determine the exact cause of death.
Hoffman struggled with drug problems in the past and sought treatment for abusing heroin in May 2013.
Hoffman's illustrious career spanned more than two decades and he won the Oscar for his role as author Truman Capote in Capote. He also received three additional Oscar nominations in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in The Master, Doubt and Charlie Wilson's War.
He also earned three Tony nominations for his work on stage.
Hoffman is set to appear in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, due out in November. The film is currently in post-production.
The acclaimed thespian is survived by his longtime partner Mimi O'Donnell and their three children, daughters Tallulah and Willa and son Cooper.
